Cross Tee Photo shoot

On December 2nd we released our second Limited Edition t-shirt- Cross Tee!

Take a look at our latest photoshoot! In contrast to the previous Photoshoot for the Concrete Jungle tee which was captured in a cellar with brick work, we wanted to take this one into the outdoors for a more organic look. We went to Worthington Park in Sale Cheshire where Pete Oakley captured these brilliant shots!

This design was by far the favourite in the Facebook vote so we have had high hopes! We wanted to release this first but due to it being a 5 colour print we needed to wait for the money to come in! Those screens are expensive!

Background of our Design

We took the photograph featured on the Tee on a Trip to Berlin with University. The wall we photographed was in the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp overlooking the entrance. It's such a powerful image and has received lots of attention.

Although we did think that this was a sensitive subject to be touching upon we found some nice quotes which were giving the people of Berlin a sense of hope in the museum! Hence the title on the Tee 'Berlin is Free'.

When we visited Berlin we went on a Fat Tyre Bike Tour where we learnt lots about the country and it's history. We were told that the Germans were scared of anything like that happening again and that lots of the remaining history had been hidden or destroyed - for instance Hitlers Bunker has now been covered with a Car park and flats!

Creative Design and Fashion Duo Rodo Creative

Rodo Creative is the work of creative duo Becky Doherty and Sarah Royle. Both graduates of Manchester Metropolitan University in Design and Art Direction, they established their own design business following the completion of their course in 2011!
“The name is simple, it’s a mix of our last names – Sarah ROyle and Becky DOherty – RODO. We have created our own exciting new venture and are loving designing t-shirts in our spare time. We also have a number of Design Brief’s on going at the moment which are keeping us busy!

We all want to leave uni and get a design job straight away, but me and Becky knew that this may not be the case. So, we kept our part time jobs at Topshop and created our own design work on the side. Whilst working in Topshop, we were asked to design some t-shirts for Topman. We designed 40 t-shirts and produced a catalogue to present them to Topman head office; after receiving amazing feedback we were disappointed to find that none of our designs had been chosen to go to print. Nethertheless, it gave us the boost we needed to start Rodo Creative on our own. Unfortunately, 2 months down the line we noticed that t-shirts very similar to ours were being sold – we know this happens to many designers including Kate Morross and tried to take it as a compliment.

In October this year we Launched our first t-shirt ‘Concrete Jungle’ which is available to buy now on ASOS Market Place! We got our inspiration for this t-shirt on a trip to New York with uni. Like any design student, we took 100s of photographs, many of which appear on this photo montage! It is great to see our product online and although we came across a few problems during the set up of producing our tees is was all worth it in the end! We now just need to get Rodo out there and sell more and design more!
Our second t-shirt came out this weekend ‘Cross Tee’ It was the favourite tee on the Facebook votes so we are expecting big things! We have already sold 8 of the 50! Whilst in Berlin we visited the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp – this is were we took the photograph of the crossed wall (see above). We love this t-shirt which is why we forked out for a 4 colour print! We had so much interest at the craft fair we did at the Reebok stadium last weekend!
Thinking about the future… We want to keep the t-shirts as our canvas but we will see what the future brings for Rodo! We would love to give to charity and maybe set up a plan so that when someone buys one of our tees – a t-shirt would also go to a child in Africa – We love to travel and get lots of inspiration from it and do all that we can to help! This would be a dream along with owing our own Tee Shop! But we’ll save the dreams for later, first things first, lets get Rodo on the map!”

Manchester Print Fair

The Manchester Print Fair was held in the NQ2022 basement last weekend. We went along to see which designers were there and to spend some money on some lovely print!

It was a great fair and we got to speak to a lot of different people - Some of which were in the same position as us - Starting up their own businesses on the side of a full time job or Uni.

Although all the designers were brilliant we can't list them all! So we have chosen the three who stood out for us.

Jamie Mills

... is an Artist and Illustrator, his work is so detailed and intricate. We have seen his "OHH DEER" work before and this was the desiger we were most looking forward to seeing.

Check out his website here : http://jamie-mills.com/

Caroline Dowsett

... is an Illustrator, she is currently at MMU on the course we graduated from last year! It was great to speak to her and hear about how our tutors are getting on and also how the course has changed. She is a very talented designer and she is only in her first year! We look forward to seeing how she develops in the future!

...and out of all the business cards we collected Caroline's was our favourite!

Take a look at Caroline's Blog: http://dowsettdoodles.blogspot.co.uk/

Lisa Stannard

... is a Designer and Fashion Illustrator, her prints were so vibrant and unusual that we were drawn to them instantly. We loved her use of colour mixed with her illustrative elements, we would love to see some of those prints made into garments!

See more of her work on her blog: http://lisastannard.tumblr.com/

Concrete Jungle Photo Shoot

Because our Concrete Jungle t-shirt has a sharp/clean design we thought it would be best to photograph it in a contrasting setting. After a couple of hours planning we came up with the idea of keeping it simple and using walls around the house. I have just moved into a house which at the moment is being decorated, we took advantage of the stripped decor and the bare brick cellar.

We are lucky enough to have a friend as a photographer who we can now work with regularly. We have recently designed some logos for Pete and we are also going to be designing flyers for him in the future. This way we don't need to worry about money, we can just re pay by doing design work for him. We learnt a lot from our photographer Pete Oakley and will look forward to our next shoot!

Preparing for Sales! Fabric Labels

FABRIC LABELS:

We had some trouble with our fabric labels, our t-shirts were ready to be sold and our paper tags were ready to be attached, however the company we used to print our Fabric Labels let us down on a number of occasions! It put our launch date back and caused a lot of frustration - we were ready but our t-shirts weren't.

We received our labels from http://www.wovenlabelsuk.com late and although not very pleased with the service, we are very happy with our labels - Better late than never I suppose!

Preparing for Sales! Paper Tags

PAPER TAGS:

We have had a busy couple of weeks preparing for putting our limited edition t-shirts on sale! We have been sewing in labels, having photo shoots and also getting the Rodo Creative Brand in the public eye! We underestimated the time this would all take but we now feel ready to get these t-shirts sold.

Take a look at our paper labels - Now ready to be pinned into the Tees!
